Description
This course provides a practical introduction to building envelope performance with a focus on preventing leaks and moisture-related damage in residential construction. Participants will learn the functions and components of the building envelope, including roofs, walls, windows, and doors, and explore the critical roles of weather-resistant barriers (WRBs), drainage systems, air gaps, drainage mats, and flashing in protecting structures from water intrusion and moisture accumulation. The course reviews applicable building code requirements, compares different weather barrier materials and systems, and demonstrates best practices for installation and integration with various cladding types such as brick veneer, siding, and stucco. Through real-world examples and field photographs, attendees will gain a clear understanding of the difference between bulk water leaks and moisture damage, how to identify common installation deficiencies, and how proper detailing and inspection practices contribute to durable, energy-efficient, and moisture-resistant building envelopes.
